PEACEFUL IN-HOME EUTHANASIA

Euthanasia

Pet euthanasia is a delicate and compassionate process that involves the intentional ending of a pet's life to alleviate suffering. Commonly used terms associated with this procedure include "euthanasia," "putting to sleep," "mercy killing," "humane euthanasia," and "peaceful passing." Veterinarians may also refer to it as "euthanising," "putting down," "Put to sleep" "PTS" or "end-of-life care." Additionally, phrases such as "crossing the rainbow bridge" and "letting go" are often employed to convey the emotional aspect of saying farewell to a beloved companion animal. These terms reflect the sensitivity and respect that surround the difficult decision to end a pet's life when it is in their best interest.

Euthanasia Vet Norfolk
PEACEFUL IN-HOME EUTHANASIA

I provide peaceful in-home euthanasia visits (or come to my comfort room/garden for this service if you don’t want your pet to die at home)

My experienced PAs, Registered Veterinary Nurse, Lorraine and ex- groomer and Dog lover, Helen, are excellent at supporting you over the phone as you make the difficult decision when to book for this service. Do get in touch and she will arrange a time to discuss with you.

When I arrive at your house I will use a calming essential oil blend on a tissue near your pet to help them feel more relaxed with a new person around them. I then spend some time with you finding out all about your pet and the special bond you have, while gently introducing myself through touch to your pet when they are ready. Next we complete the paperwork and make sure that you are certain about arrangements for afterwards. I will then decide which medicines are most suitable for your pet and quietly prepare them in another room while you spend some time with your pet. The rest of the family are welcome to be involved, including other pets - as much or as little as they choose.

I will gently administer a sequence of medicines to calm your pet prior to the final injection. There is usually no nausea, and your pet can smoothly fall asleep in your arms.  Once they are deeply sleeping, and unaware, the final medicine will be given, during or shortly after this injection, death will occur.

I will give you space to have a few moments alone with your pet after they have died before returning to make whatever keepsakes you choose - a clipping of fur or a nose/paw imprint, as well as quietly attending to any hygiene needs. I offer both ink and play-doh paw prints, which can then be used as you wish, or sent to Theresa at Pob's pet keepsakes to be made into plaster-of-paris paw keepsakes. She can also create keepsakes using ashes or hair into glass.

I allocate at least an hour, often more, for these appointments to allow everybody plenty of time to process, including other pets and other members of the family, who are welcome to be present.

I will then assist you with your planned choice for aftercare - whether wrapping for burial in the garden, or I (for a small additional fee) can transport your pet in my car to Abbey Pets.  Please call them on 07771 700524 before my visit to arrange choice of casket or scatter-tube and fees directly with them.

Of course you are welcome to arrange for another pet crematorium to collect your pet, or I can assist you with transferring to your car if you are taking the body to the pet crematorium. If you are local to your regular veterinary surgery, I can take the body to them so they can arrange cremation on your behalf.

Before I leave, I will leave you with two essential oil blends to comfort you in the early days after your loss. If you would like to call Lorraine or Helen to talk about your grief, they are available to help with telephone support and can signpost you to pet bereavement charities who offer a free counselling service.

CREMATORIUM INFORMATION

We can assist with your choice of crematorium, nose and paw prints and advise on other ways of memorialising your pet. Some crematoria will collect directly from your home, others request that you transport the body to them. This needs to be arranged in advance of my appointment to visit you. Lorraine can help you with this when booking.

I have visited the following independent local Pet Crematoria and can assure you that their procedures are sound and their people kind.

  • Abbey Pets, Rackheath/Sheringham - I offer transfer to Abbey Pets, for a small additional fee.

  • https://abbey-pets.co.uk/        call 01603 720777

  • Rainbow Bridge, Great Yarmouth

  • Peaceful Pets, near Fakenham

  • Mill House Crematorium, near Halesworth

Most crematoria will make ink paw prints and some will make paw casts, do discuss this with them.

If you live close to your normal veterinary practice, I can transport your pet to the practice within their opening hours and they will take care of arranging the cremation and bill you directly.

This must be arranged with them in advance of my appointment.

You are of course welcome to chat with Lorraine or Helen about your feelings around your pet's death. I will support you in person at the time of the visit as well.

BEAUTIFUL KEEPSAKES & GRIEF SUPPORT

I can make nose and paw impressions and then send them away to a local company, Pob's pet keepsakes (find them on Facebook) who make lovely copper or silver mementos of noses, or clay paws.

I also carry an ink pad and card for paw prints - I can make as many ink paw prints as you wish - one for every member of the extended family is never too many.

Grief support materials, and support via WhatsApp/Zoom/Phone/Email is also available before and after euthanasia.
