Dr Shelagh Pitt BVMS MRCVS
I graduated from Glasgow Vet School way back in the last century, and started work at Anchorage Vets in Acle. Norfolk grabbed me and held onto me - I have lived here ever since and raised my family here in Norwich. Local practices I have worked at include Companion Care Sprowston, Catton, Thorpe and Hellesdon Vets and the Bure Valley branch of Taverham Vets. Most recently I had 6 months at Rackheath vets, but that wasn’t to be, so now I am following my heart and running my own business full time doing Holistic Veterinary work and Peaceful in-Home Euthanasia. I have converted my garage into a peaceful treatment room with ramped access and your pet will be the only one on the premises when you visit. There is parking in my driveway or on the street outside.

My interest in Holistic Vetting started when my own lurcher, Penny, became old and painful in about 2011. Conventional medications upset her tummy, so I learned acupuncture for her. It gave her a new lease of life and an extra few years, living until she was 17. I have been practising Vet Acupuncture, mostly for chronic pain, one day a week from home ever since. I wish I had known about acupuncture when my cat became old and stiff. I adopted a retired Greyhound, Jayne, in 2024 who is settling in nicely.

Although I am Western trained in acupuncture, the Chinese triad of acupuncture, herbal medicine and nutrition appealed to both my heart and my analytical, critical scientific brain. I sought a course in herbal medicine in 2018, adding that to my practice. I have built on that knowledge and gained a good understanding of Raw and minimally processed canine and feline nutrition and the myriad of supplements that are marketed to pet owners since then. Jayne transitioned well to raw feeding, though she doesn't cope with much fat content. I am learning gradually which proteins suit her and which don't (pheasant was rather explosive, rabbit makes her itch).

Enough people have asked me about homoeopathy that I am now learning more. I can guide you on the intricacies of vaccines and titre testing, deworming and worm egg counts. I am well read on other chronic diseases - especially thyroid disease and have read lots of recent research that is emerging around the topic of spaying bitches and castrating dogs…or not. Ovary sparing spay and vasectomy may well be the future.

I regularly network with local trainers and behaviourists, who often see an animal presenting with a behaviour or training problem that is actually in pain. I can carry out detailed pain assessments including off lead gait analysis and free-work in my fully fenced garden. The peace of being the only animal on the premises thus reducing anxiety and adrenaline, which so often masks pain in a veterinary clinic setting. My fingers have located painful areas that have exactly matched the findings on a subsequent MRI scan.

I also network with local animal physio-therapists, hydro-therapists and myo-therapists and am able to help you choose the most appropriate care package for your pet at that time and stage.

Cats are usually very amenable to acupuncture, owners are amazed at how they become calm and sit still accepting the tiny needles really well. Cats are almost always very good acupuncture responders.

Seeing my acupuncture clients regularly through the final years of their lives, I came to the realisation that owners worried about the end of life care for their pet, wanting a peaceful ending at home surrounded by familiarity and love. Changing times in the veterinary profession, and scarcity of vets in some areas has made access to home visits in a timely fashion sometimes difficult to obtain.
I have jumped through a lot of hoops to be able to offer this service to local pet owners and completed an in depth training course from the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy. I dedicate over an hour to these appointments and always use sedation prior to the final medicine being given, to gently and peacefully end life. Holistic Vet Norfolk can assist you around the decision making about burial or cremation, having personally visited all the local independent pet crematoria in Norfolk. I will make any keepsakes that you would like, from ink paw prints, to nose impressions for making into a keyring/jewellery, to playdoh paw prints. Fur clippings can be left with you in a little bag also.
I then leave you with some essential oil blends to help you with your grief and we provide support materials and phone support afterwards to help you travel the path without your beloved pet.

I couldn’t do it without my team:

Lorraine - Registered Veterinary Nurse, who sorts out admin for appointments and can help you talk through your decision making process around when is the best time for gentle euthanasia.

Lisa, another client with her dog, Fred looks after the general admin.

Helen, a long time client of mine and owner of Dennis and Tyler, will take the calls when Lorraine is unavailable, and do all sorts of other useful tasks.

James, our website man, who has been patient through all of my changes!
Jane, my neighbour, helps with keeping the books and sorting out my tax return and Jon has been my builder and general handyman.
Lorraine - Personal Assistant
My name is Lorraine, I have been a veterinary nurse for 25 years. I have mainly worked in first opinion hospitals, with a 4 year stint in ophthalmology referral.
Two years ago I took the leap out of mainstream nursing to work for my friend who runs a chronic pain clinic in Kent. Through her I met Shelagh and now look after all client contact from the first message and onwards.
I can help with end of life advice, any herbal medicine administration issues and the management of Shelagh's diary. I love chatting to clients about their pets, no question is a silly question! It's lovely to be part of the team at Holistic Vet Norfolk, knowing that we are helping pets to be as free from pain as possible.
On Sundays & Bank Holidays I keep my practical nursing skills up to date working in Emergency and Critical Care In Kent where I live. In my spare time I am mostly found serving my rescue cat Crowley's every need or walking in the countryside.

Lisa - Personal Assistant
I am a highly accomplished professional with a diverse set of skills to offer as a virtual assistant. My desire to take care of animals and my interest in holistic pet care bought my attention to Holistic Vet Norfolk when I needed some complementary care advice for Fred, my Bassett Griffon.
I had heard wonderful things about Shelagh so made my first appointment, we clicked instantly as we both have a passion for natural healing in pets wherever possible. I participate wherever I can in the holistic approach to caring for our loved ones. I love my walks on the beach at Winterton every day, rain, or shine and being with nature.

I am now extremely excited at this opportunity to be part of the team with Holistic Vet Norfolk and being part of the team to offer complementary care for our furry friends.
Helen - Personal Assistant
My name is Helen. I grew up in Chelmsford and moved to Norfolk when I was posted to RAF Neatished in my late twenties. I instantly fell in love with Norfolk and have remained here ever since. My career has been about as varied as it could be. As well as my time in the RAF I have worked in banking and insurance, been a driving instructor and most recently a dog groomer.
I have always been completely obsessed with animals and grew up with lots of dogs and even spent many years breeding and showing my own goats.

I think my interest in natural health care began when my previous Cavalier started acupuncture when he was elderly. He also started my passion for raw feeding when the tummy problems he had suffered from all his life were solved overnight by changing him on to raw.

I now share my life with two beautiful senior dogs, a Cavalier and a Cavalier cross. They both have some age related pain issues and were my introduction to Shelagh who has been treating them with acupuncture and herbal remedies for many years. They both absolutely love their visits to see Shelagh.

I will be helping Lorraine with the phones in the early mornings during the week. I’m looking forward to helping Shelagh spread the word about natural health care. But I’d better warn you, I can talk for hours when I get talking about our pets!
